About Phil Smith

“Photography is good for the soul” – PS

Meet Phil Smith

Phil’s passion for photography began in his teens with a Kodak Instamatic in hand and a love for storytelling sparked by the vivid imagery found in National Geographic. That early love evolved quickly, where he upgrade to a Minolta SRT 100 SLR camera gifted by his father and later deepened his skills by studying classic darkroom printing techniques in Chicago. With a foundation in both film and digital photography, and a background in geology, Phil blends timeless artistry with technical precision, creating images that have a unique perspective.

Today, Phil Smith is a professional photographer specializing in:

Speaking Without Words

Every image tells a story, but some of the most powerful ones are felt, not heard

Phil’s love for animals is not just a part of who he is, it’s something you feel from the moment you see him interact with them; true connection. As a devoted dog owner to his two rescues, Cody, a Labrador mix, and Madeline, a Boxer mix, Phil understands the patience, trust, and quiet communication that animals rely on. That understanding carries through in every interaction, whether he’s behind the camera or simply sitting on the ground earning their trust.

He is a natural, in a way of connecting, meeting animals where they are, allowing them to feel safe, seen, and completely at ease. It’s not uncommon to find dogs drawn to him during photoshoots, leaning in, climbing into his lap, or simply choosing to stay close.

Beyond his own companions, Phil donates his time photographing dogs available for adoption, helping local shelters and organizations showcase each animal’s personality in hopes of finding them their forever home. These sessions are never rushed, they’re built on patience, play, and genuine affection.

For Phil, it’s never just about the photograph. It’s about the connection, and giving a voice to even those who speak without words.
